Living With Water Programme:
integrated solutions for Belfast

Living With Water is a new holistic and integrated approach to the provision of drainage and wastewater infrastructure.

Explore how models of the Belfast Lough catchment and water body were used to support the programme and help define infrastructure requirements.

Mission

Welcome to the Living With Water Programme (LWWP), a new approach to the provision of drainage and wastewater infrastructure.

LWWP promotes holistic and integrated solutions that achieve multiple benefits at reduced cost and disruption, for example by using open spaces and watercourses to enhance the environment, promoting recreational opportunities and by sustainably managing water to help reduce flood risk.

This is termed the blue/green infrastructure. In addition to blue/green infrastructure, significant investment is also required in more traditional ‘hard engineered’ infrastructure, like sewers, pumping stations and upgrades to Wastewater Treatment Works.

Empowering progress: Our vision

1. Flood protection

Protect against flooding by managing the flow of water through the catchment from source to sea, taking into account the challenges of climate change.

2. Environmental sustainability

Enhance the environment through ecologically sound management, nature-based solutions, and the provision of blue/green spaces to benefit local communities.

3. Economic growth

Grow the economy by providing the necessary capacity in drainage and wastewater management systems to facilitate new developments, including housing projects.
